FireFox Jumps To 13% Of Global Market Share

How many people use firefox browser
According to the Amsterdam analytics firm onestat The FireFox browser has jumped from a global market share of 8.7% to a whopping 13% since April 2005.

The national usage of firefox make some interesting reading, too, with FireFox making up 16% in the USA, 24% in Australia and a huge 39% in Germany.

Onestat provide visitor statistics for 50'000 websites from 100 countries, The FireFox usage statistics are based on these websites and countries.

It has been known for sometime that the number of FireFox users are growing, Webmasters can see this by looking at their own visitor stats, But these FireFox usage statistics are usually inaccurate as they only represent one websites user base, It's to be expected that a coding or Linux forum would have a higher number of users using FireFox than a more general website such as BBC (which requires WMP to play media) or myspace.

In what locale is it customary to write 50,000 as "50'000"?

W3Counter's Global Stats put Firefox usage at nearly 25%. They track over 1,000 websites to aggregate these statistics.

I hope this will lead to better compatibility for Firefox on websites. Still, these days it's quite a bit better than quite some time ago when major sites like ESPN would be a brokem jigsaw to viewers.

To expand on previous comment, the BBC has been scrupulous in making sure that its vast web site is not tied to any one platform. For that reason, they chose Real as their main streaming format, because players are available for many platforms. Use of Windows-proprietary format was done as an experiment, but subsequently dropped.

The BBC has said that it would prefer to use an open standard for streaming, but none has met its requirements, so a multi-platform closed standard is the next-best thing.

IMO, the BBC is an exemplar as to how a truly vast web site really can be platform and browser independent.

WMP works fine on my Firefox browser, took some fiddling but I got it working eventually.

One thing is for sure, You will never get WMP working on Linux.

Maybe you should look into "mplayerplug-in". I've had no problems streaming WMV. I've heard there's also a xine plug-in... so which ever your preference.

Oh... if you're using windows, then you may not have such good luck.

Whoever said WMV won't work on Linux is dead wrong. Install MozPlugger and your Win32 codecs, both packaged by most distros and available on sourceforge, and WMP will stream fine to your browser of choice. I've gotten it to work fine with Firefox & Opera on my Ubuntu box.
