Add Social Bookmarking Buttons To Blogger Blog

Social bookmarking is a powerful tool. It allows your users to save links to your site to their page on their social bookmarking site, then others are able to see what links they have saved and perhaps visit them. Then perhaps they will also add that page to their social bookmarking account.

Some of the most popular social bookmarking sites are Blogmarks, Del.icio.us, Digg, Furl, Google, netvouz, Newsvine, Reddit, Spurl and Technorati..
There are many more, But those are my favorites.

If you look under each of my posts you should see little icons for each of these social bookmarks services. When a user clicks the icon they are able to save that post to the social bookmarking service of their choice..

The social bookmarking button code i am posting will work with blogger straight away, The same code can be used for other blogs but will need to have the appropriate sections changed accordingly..

You will have to figure out where to copy this to in your blogger template based on what template you used, But it should go somewhere under your post, I would recommend directly under the <$BlogItemBody$> tag and will look like this

Wow, nice one. I have been looking for these social bookmarking buttons for ages.

I also agree that too many make the page look tacky. Best to use no more than 10 social bookmarking buttons.

Hi Matt.

I love the buttons but I am having a problem pasting the code into Blogger Minima template.

I have a "Read more..." code inserted to shorten posts on the main page. If I paste your code as instructed I get the buttons on the Main Page.

I played with this for about an hour, trying various spots in the template, but can't get the buttons at the end of the post when the complete article shows.

Any ideas anyone? I could put the code by editing each Post but I have more than 150 posts I would have to edit. Sheesh!

Just discovered and used your code on my site and it works beautifully - thanks!

@Newsman

im guessing that you placed the buttons within the mainorarchive tag

<MainOrArchivePage><br />
<a href="<$BlogItemPermalinkURL$>">Read more!</a>
PROBABLY PASTED CODE HERE
</MainOrArchivePage>

instead paste it just after </MainOrArchivePage> so it becomes

<MainOrArchivePage><br />
<a href="<$BlogItemPermalinkURL$>">Read more!</a>
</MainOrArchivePage>
CODE PASTED HERE

if you want it to appear only on the post itself, enclose within <ItemPage> and </ItemPage>

then it will be

<MainOrArchivePage><br />
<a href="<$BlogItemPermalinkURL$>">Read more!</a>
</MainOrArchivePage>
<ItemPage>CODE PASTED HERE
</ItemPage>

My blog template not have a <$BlogItemBody$> line of code. Where should I put the social bookmarking code?

Posted by Blogger [ Matt ] @ Saturday, 06 October, 2007

If you don't have a blogitembody tag you are probably using tyhe new blogger temple. This wont work with that.

Blogger won't let me save these with the following tags:

<$BlogItemPermalinkURL$>

<$BlogItemTitle$>

Can you offer a substitute code?
